Low-Intermediate 3 Overview
Low-Intermediate 3 Goals
These are the main goals of Low-Intermediate 3. You can download the Low-Intermediate 3 Paths to Fluency Tracker to help track students' progress towards these goals.
Low-Intermediate 3 Tips
1. Each unit at this level was designed for 1 week with about 3 hours of class time per week. If you have your students for less than 3 hours a week, you may want to consider doing a unit every two weeks. If students are picking up the material quickly and easily, you can try picking up the pace so that you make quicker progress through the level. Just remember the goal is fluency with the content. Learning the material well is better than getting through quickly and forgetting everything.
2. Review of Beginners 4 to Low-Intermediate 2: The first three units are all review of previous levels. If you find that students are struggling a bit with be-verbs (Beginners 4), present simple or present continuous (Low-Intermediate 1) or future or past simple tenses (Low-Intermediate 2), you can head back to those levels and print off what you need to spend some more time reviewing before moving on with the Low-Intermediate 3 materials.
3. Present Perfect Tense: Present perfect tense is not that difficult to learn. The biggest problem are the irregular past participles (eaten, driven, etc) and teachers trying too hard to explain when to use it. Most native speakers don't really know how to explain when it is used, they just have a feel for it. That is what you want for your students as well. Have a quick, succinct explanation that you can repeat and then focus on getting the students using the tense as much as possible in speech and writing. The more they use it, the more they will develop a feel for when to use it.
4. Weak Readers: If your students need to work on reading and phonics, you will want to bring in some practice sheets from Beginners 1-3. Look for the word lists and reading passages for the phonics your students need work on.

5. Literature, Science and Social Studies: You will start seeing units on literature, science and social studies in this level. These units pair well with what they are learning in this level. They are also aligned to elementary common core standards. They are not required to progress through the curriculum but they are wonderfully helpful for students' general education classes, vocabulary and content knowledge.
