Intermediate 4 Overview

Intermediate 4 Goals

These are the main goals of this level:

  • Grammar: Conjunctions, Present-Perfect Continuous, Past Perfect
  • Speaking: Expanding on sentence complexity
  • Writing: Writing Persuasive Essays
  • Reading: Reading for Story Structure, Making Inferences, Comparing Texts
  • Vocabulary & Spelling
  • Intermediate 4 Tips

    1. Units are themed. Each Unit includes both a literary passage and an informational passage related to the theme of the unit.

    2. Writing Persuasive Essays: one focus in Intermediate 4 is on writing solid persuasive essays. Once students have finished this level, they should have a clear grasp on how to structure and write a 5-part persuasive essay.

    3. Each unit was designed for 4 weeks with about 3 hours of class time a week. If you have your students for less than 3 hours a week, you may want to consider taking more time for a unit. If students are picking up the material quickly and easily, you can try picking up the pace so that you make quicker progress through the level. Just remember the goal is fluency with the content. Learning the material well is better than getting through quickly and forgetting everything.

    4. Students In Need of More Basic Grammar Help: For tenses, you can grab the Tenses Anchor Chart to help students remember what's needed for the 6 basic tenses. Also helpful: Irregular Verbs Chart, grammar lessons from Beginners 4 ~ Intermediate 2.

    5. Weak Readers: If your students need to work on reading to decode and phonics at this level, you can grab the Phonics Anchor Chart to review the major phonics combinations. Students can start identifying those combinations in the texts they read by underlining or highlighting words that follow the rules you want them to practice. Also helpful: Fluency Readers
