The communication book page is another helpful way to be in good communication with parents.

Even if parents don't read it or sign it, sending it home each class protects you from a student saying he or she didn't know what the homework was, or saying that you didn't really do anything in class. 

Unfortunately, kids tend to spin things in ways that benefit themselves, not you. 

Those parents who take an active part in their students' education will appreciate knowing what you did in class and what homework needs to be completed.
