Overview of the Phonics Anchor Chart:

Good phonics skills help students with reading, spelling, & speaking pronunciation.

This tool includes a phonics fill-in page. There is an answer key as well as a half-page version below. The fill-in covers most of the major phonics sounds students need to know. Students should be able to fill it in from memory.

When students read, they can have the chart next to them. That way they can look up sounds as they come across them in the books they are reading.

To use this tool, you can:

1. Review the sounds together.

2. Check in with students individually.

When checking in individually, there are two important abilities to check on.

a. The student can look at each combination and remember the sound it makes--you should be able to point to any phonics combination on the fill-in and the student should be able to say the sound quickly and easily. This checks on the skill students need when they are reading.

b. The second can point to a phonics combination(s) when they hear its sound. This practices the skill they need when they are spelling words.

Note: Version 1 Has one fewer row of sounds than version 2.

  • Print off the filled chart and hang it on a wall or project it on a screen with a projector or smart board.
  • Print off the unfilled chart for students to complete themselves as you discuss the question words.
  • (Optional) Students can fill the chart in using their home language.
  • Students can keep their Anchor Charts in a folder with plastic sleeves for reference during their classes.
